What is it?

The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is a special discounted pass available only to travelers visiting Japan (with a short-term visa no longer than 90 days) and holding a non-Japanese passport. Within the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass valid area, this pass allows unlimited rides on the JR Hokkaido Lines and on JR East Lines. Convenient for travel from Narita or Haneda Airport to the general Tokyo region and from New Chitose Airport to greater Sapporo, the pass allows unlimited rides even on the Shinkansen and limited express trains to move around Tokyo and reach such destinations as Aomori and Sendai. Also, this pass can be used on the Hokkaido Shinkansen which will start operation in March 2016! Enjoy traveling on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. Period of use

Flexible Six Days: After arriving in Japan, select any six days in the 14-day period starting on the day of issue. Example: For a pass issued on August 1, any six days may be selected between August 1 and August 14.

Notes:

  • Sales and the use period of the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass start on Friday, April 1, 2016.
  • The day the pass is issued is the day it is exchanged (when purchased outside of Japan) or sold (when purchased in Japan).

  • ** This pass may be used for Tobu Railway Lines as long as either the departing or destination station is on a JR line.
  • This pass is not valid for the Tokaido Shinkansen as that is operated by a different rail company.
  • GALA Yuzawa Station is in operation only in winter and spring.
  • Special operating intervals and trains may be in service to meet the needs in the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
  • This pass is not valid for JR buses.

Before departing for Japan, purchase an Exchange Order at a travel agent or other authorized seller.

Step 2

After arriving in Japan, take your Exchange Order and passport to an exchange location. You will receive your JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass after confirmation of eligibility.

Step 3

Making a reservation at a station

Reservations can be made at Travel Service Centers (View Plazas) and JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-madoguchi) located in JR East stations, as well as at Travel Service Centers (Twinkle Plazas) and JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-madoguchi) located in JR Hokkaido stations. Your pass is required when reserving a designated seat.

  • "Temporary Visitor" only

JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is available exclusively for visitors from abroad who enter Japan under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor". Both of the below two conditions must be met for purchase and use.

  • The pass user must have a passport issued by a country other than Japan.

  • The pass user must enter Japan as a temporary visitor and have "Temporary Visitor" stamped in their passport as shown at right.
  • The status of temporary visitor is established in Japanese immigration law and permits stays in the country of up to 90 days for purposes such as sightseeing. Visitors desiring to enter Japan for sightseeing will receive a stamp, as shown at right, saying "Temporary Visitor" in their passport from the immigration officer.

Notes:

  • Confirmation of the passport entry stamp is required when making an exchange for or purchasing a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass in Japan.
  • Without the proper passport stamp, the pass cannot be purchased and Exchange Orders cannot be exchanged. Also, please carry your passport when using your pass. It may be required by JR staff for identity confirmation.
  • Visitors with dual citizenship in Japan and another country will not be able to use a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass if they entered Japan with their Japanese passport.
  • A JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass cannot be purchased if the period of stay in Japan noted in the passport is shorter than the validity period of the pass.

Changes and Refunds

Changes
The starting date of the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass may not be changed.
JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Refunds
  • Refunds are available at JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass sales and exchange locations. The pass must be unused and the validity period cannot have started on the day the refund is made.
  • If the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass has clearly not been used, a refund may be made after the start of the validity period. In this case, a refund fee applies. However, if a reserved seat ticket was issued with the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass, no refund will be made after the departure time regardless of whether the pass has been used to ride a train.
  • The application/backing must be still attached to the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass to receive a refund.
  • Refunds are not made for canceled or delayed train service (exceptions may be made for total system stoppages).
  • Refunds for credit card purchases are available only from the original seller's sales locations.
Exchange Order refunds
  • Refunds are available for Exchange Orders for one year from the date of issuance if not yet exchanged for a pass. See the selling agent. A fee may apply for refunds. JR Hokkaido and JR East do not make refunds for Exchange Orders. The amount of the fee depends on the seller.

  • For Exchange Orders purchased overseas (exchanges for a pass at Michinoku Tour Information at Sendai Airport)
    Michinoku Tour Information at Sendai Airport cannot provide refunds. Refunds are made at other locations providing exchange services for the JR EAST-South Hokkaido Rail Pass.
  • For pass purchases made at Michinoku Tour Information at Sendai Airport
    Refunds are made at domestic locations selling the JR EAST-South Hokkaido Rail Pass.
Other
  • Lost Exchange Orders and JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Passes will not be reissued.
  • The JR East-South Hokkaido Pass may be used only by the person noted on the pass. Please carry your passport when using your pass. You may be required to show your passport by railway officials.
